When an international ring of sex traffickers kidnaps an eight-year-old girl in Boston, FBI Agent Lucas Randall heads undercover. But his rescue operation goes disastrously wrong and Lucas barely escapes with his life. Now the ruthless traffickers are hunting him down, along with everyone else who threatens their operation.
Computer expert Ashley Chen joined the FBI to fight against evil in the world—evil she experienced firsthand. She has mad skills, and deadly secrets, and once she starts working with Lucas, she also has big trouble, because after years of pushing people away, she’s falling for the guy. The feeling is more than mutual, but as Ashley intensifies her online pursuit of the trafficking ring, her traumatic past collides with her present and suddenly Lucas can’t tell which side she’s on. And as the case escalates into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, it turns out Ashley isn’t the only one with something to hide.
If neither can trust the other with their secrets, how can they trust each other with their hearts?

I'm a bit OCD about reading a series in order, even though the books can be read as stand alone novels. So when I saw Toni Anderson's series was getting a blog tour, I knew I wanted to sign up, but that I also had to read ALL of them. I powered through the whole series within a few weeks and loved every single minute of them. I wasn't able to get reviews in for all of them in time, but today I'm shining the spotlight on COLD SECRETS, book seven in the series.
I love that this book starts off with the conflict right away because it made me so invested in the characters and this story. It was an explosive start that detailed the important and heartbreaking topic of human trafficking/sex slavery. Some of the scenes, though not told in great detail every time still made my stomach churn. Though I managed to get through it, I guarantee there are some readers/listeners that will not be able to take it. I’d recommend reading a few reviews before jumping in.
FBI Agents Ashley Chen and Lucas Randall are tasked to take down the human trafficking ring, all while maintaining a sex-only relationship. Both of them struggle morally and ethically to do the right thing during the investigation. The tension from both angles of the story keep it interesting and suspenseful. I liked the great detail put forth toward explaining the investigation. Though the crime and the way it was handled in this book didn’t necessarily seem as authentic as others, it was still enthralling.
The truly epic, evil villains of this story, again, will make you sick, but sadly, felt all too real. I know for a fact people will hate the constant descriptions of child rape and racial discrimination against Agent Chen, because I have read the reviews that state just that. But, guess what, those things are really happening right now as I type this. You’d think the world would be close to perfect after all this time, but no. Racism and racial profiling is alive and thriving, unfortunately, and reading about them in books like this remind us and make us aware that we need to personally take stands in order to change. Okay, this is getting a little too heavy. Back to the book!
Eric G. Dove narrates all of the books in the series, and boy, does he do it well. He gives great emotion, inflections, and knows how to differentiate characters. This is so important for me while listening to audiobooks, because it takes me out of the book a bit when I have to figure who is speaking when every character sounds the same. His female voices are great, too, which is a huge bonus for me. He doesn’t just default to a high pitched “girly” voice and I appreciate that. I highly recommend checking out this entire series on audio, which is currently available in Audible’s Romance Package (books 1-6).
