Book Review ✭ Toxic by Kim Karr

Will they or won’t they?
Meet Phoebe & Jeremy in this second chance romance!
New York Times bestselling author Kim Karr turns up the heat in a smoking hot, emotionally compelling romance that takes you into the world of Manhattan's elite. Meet Jeremy McQueen, a sexy, intense, brooding entrepreneur who goes after what he wants, and Phoebe St. Claire, a socialite-turned-CEO who's been drifting through life searching for something she thought she'd never find again--the right man to share her future.
Phoebe St. Claire has devoted herself to saving her family's hotel empire--but her best efforts have not been good enough. With her whole world in turmoil, the tenacious go-getter turns to the once love of her life. Far from innocent, Jeremy McQueen was the guy from the wrong side of the tracks who her parents would never have approved of. Their years apart have only made the sexy bad boy more irresistible than ever--and their reunion is explosive.
When she asks Jeremy to help her salvage her family business, he agrees immediately, with only one condition--he wants her in his bed.
But soon surprising circumstances leave Phoebe reeling. Was this fairy tale romance just too good to be true? Will Jeremy's secrets pull them apart all over again?
Jeremy McQueen and Phoebe St. Claire met in their early twenties and began a hot, summer romance. Their relationship may have stood a chance if it hadn’t started on a foundation of lies.
Several years pass, yet no amount of time can douse their deep chemistry and attraction to each other. Finding themselves with another shot at love proves to be quite the complicated situation. In order to succeed in love this time around, Jeremy and Phoebe will have to dredge up and smooth out their past, and learn to trust one another.
Overall, this was a tough story to read because of the emotional struggles the characters faced. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it was certainly a bumpy ride for Jeremy and Phoebe, that which I went along for.
They had such a sizzling and indomitable connection that gave way to an intensely passionate story.

The flashbacks that the author spread throughout the book were perfectly placed and they presented the differentiation between the characters of the present and the past. Seeing the way they started out their relationship all those years ago allowed me to see the reasoning behind Phoebe and at times even Jeremy’s hesitation in pursuing their second chance at love. They clearly pointed out the growth the characters had and characteristics they still held.

I loved the imperfections both of these characters possessed. This story showed the ugly truth of jealousy’s catastrophic influence on relationships.
Did the characters make mistakes and jump to conclusions countless times? Absolutely. But that’s the reality of letting jealousy consume your thoughts and behavior.
This was a frustrating read in the sense that I wanted to yell at the characters for not believing in one another and simply taking a moment to analyze the situation before reacting. There were several moments that had me anxious and worried whether they’d even be able to sort things out. On the other hand, I enjoyed seeing the way they kept coming back together and eventually discussing the issues slowly but surely.

Kim Karr has created yet another successful stand-alone outside of the Connections series. This second chance romance will have you reeling from the emotional journey Jeremy and Phoebe embark upon.
