Coen Steele has spent the last five years serving his country. Now that he's back, he's finally ready to leave behind the chaos of the battlefield and pursue his lifelong dream. What he wasn't expecting was the feisty sister of one of his battle buddies—who has made it obvious that she wants nothing to do with him—to intrigue him in a way no woman has before.

Reagan Hudson's life changed in the blink of an eye six years ago when she found out she was pregnant and on her own. Since then, Reagan has vowed never to let another man into her life so that no one can walk out on her, or her son, again. But the more she runs into her brother's hot and mysterious friend, the more he sparks something in her that she promised herself she wouldn't feel again.

Can two people with everything to lose allow themselves to finally capture the love they both deserve?

My Review:

Reagan has raised her son Parker all by herself since her once boyfriend wanted nothing to do with her or his baby. She’s kept to herself and focused on her son and family. Dating has never been an option for her, because she hasn’t wanted her son or her to get hurt again.

Coen Steele, best friends with Keegan (Reagan’s brother), has just gotten out of the army but remains haunted by his time in the service. His demons keep him from sleeping and finding a healthy, normal routine. His past doesn’t allow him to find a romantic relationship; he doesn’t think he deserves one.

When these two collide, they both sense a change within themselves. They crave each other, but most importantly, they need one another.

“I never expected to find you; I didn’t know someone like you existed. I never knew there could be relief from the agony I go through every day, and I don’t know what I did to deserve it. But after having that relief, after having you near me… Reagan, I crave you.”

The beginning of the story got to me. I felt Reagan’s pain and rejection from her unborn baby’s father. I admired her determination to stay independent and handle problems on her own.
Told from both POV’s, it made it easy to grasp what both characters were thinking and feeling.
I could see why Reagan was resistant to being more with Coen. Especially when it involved her son.
It was saddening to read through Coen’s painful past. He so desperately wanted to make it work her for more reasons other than the fact that the darkness disappeared when she was around.

“Everything’s fast with us, but fast feels right when I’m with you.”

There wasn’t much of an insta-love per say. There was certainly a connection between the two from the start, but it was a slow build up in acknowledging their actual feelings. The ending was one of the cutes, most romantic scenes I’ve ever read. I’m talking an ocean of happy tears. Coen truly redeemed himself in a beautiful way. The scene is swoon worthy and will leave you wanting to be Reagan.

Though it wasn’t one of my favorites from McAdams, I think it’s definitely worth one-clicking.

About Molly:

Molly grew up in California but now lives in the oh-so-amazing state of Texas with her husband and furry four-legged daughters. When she's not diving into the world of her characters, some of her hobbies include hiking, snowboarding, traveling, and long walks on the beach … which roughly translates to being a homebody with her hubby and dishing out movie quotes. She has a weakness for crude-humored movies, fried pickles and loves curling up in a fluffy comforter during a thunderstorm ... or under one in a bathtub if there are tornados. That way she can pretend they aren't really happening.
