Release Blitz: ARC Review~ Donners of the Dead by Karina Halle

Karina Halle Donners of the Dead***A Standalone Horror Romance***
Jake McGraw was unlike anyone I’d ever known. He was brash, rude, unapologetic and arrogant; chauvinistic, close-minded, and terribly stubborn. He was built like a tree, tall with a hard chest and wide shoulders and hands that looked like they could wrestle a bear. He was a cigar-chomping, scruffy-faced, beast of a man. I was pretty sure I hated him. And I know he hated me. But among the flesh-eating monsters in these snow-capped mountains, he was the only thing keeping me alive.

The year is 1851 and pioneers in search of California gold are still afraid to travel on the same route as the tragic Donner party did years before. When the last wagon train to go into the Sierra Nevada mountains fails to arrive at their destination, Eve Smith, an 18-year old half-native girl with immense tracking skills is brought along with the search party, headed by an enigmatic former Texas Ranger, Jake McGraw. What they find deep in the dangerous snow-covered terrain is a terrifying consequence of cannibalism, giving new meaning to the term “monster.” While the search party is slowly picked off, one by one, Eve must learn to trust Jake, who harbors more than a few secrets of his own, in order to survive and prevent the monstrosities from reaching civilization.

❥My Review:
"Men are the real monsters here. They often are."

Donners of the Dead will send you straight under the covers to hide from the flesh eaters and/or to dream about the handsome and rugged Jake McGraw.

I couldn't put this book down! I was frightened, intrigued, and swooning all at the same time.

Zombies, horror, cowboys, Indians, the Donner Party.. It's safe to say I was incredibly eager to see what this story had to offer. How could those things possibly fit into a great book, right? Leave it to Queen Karina to execute it smoothly. She managed to combine all those topics and create a historical world with supernatural aspects that just made sense.

Beyond that there was family, friendship, and romance. I ticked off every requirement on my list for a great book. Those aspects combined with the factual incorporation of the Donner Party made the story that much more believable. The concept of the flesh eating people seemed like a spine-chilling possibility.

To give a bit more of a light-hearted tone, there's some romance mixed into this bloodcurdling story line. In my opinion the romance slowly built up which I personally really liked. It was subtle, but most likely you could interpret the bickering and rudeness as sexual tension.

Each and every character was written so well. Even when I hated them, I liked them. They were all so real that they could easily have been people you knew. Every single person in the group had something to contribute; they all played their part.

I especially liked our heroine, Eve. Half indian and half white, she's struggled her entire life but especially since her father's disappearance. She basically had to fend for herself amongst the white community. She wasn't welcomed anywhere and was even shunned from school. When the group of men make her an offer to join their trek up the mountain, the choice isn't up to her but rather her uncle. Of course he wants the money, so he sends her own her way. The entire trip essentially rests on her tracker shoulders. I'd say overall she handles that and herself pretty well. She held her own against every single one of those men.

Karina Halle has yet again added another excellent story to her collection of works. Whenever I'm in need of a good scare, I'll be sure to pick Donners of the Dead of my shelf for a re-read.
