Synopsis

A promise to keep….

Honoring her mother’s last wish, Lane Channing vows to follow her dreams. She takes the ‘big risk’ and leaves her small Kansas town behind and heads to LA, the city of dreams. She’s got a stellar job lined up, an old jeep, and 20 bucks to last her to her first paycheck. Her hopes shatter when she arrives to find her job’s been given to someone else.  Now she’s broke and will soon be living on the streets if she doesn’t do something fast. Welcome to cutthroat – Lane is most certainly not in Kansas anymore.

On the cusp of success…

Dillon MacAvoy has one goal–to become a star–whatever it takes. Even if it means honing his bad-boy can’t-be-tamed-and-forever-single image. Besides the image isn’t far from the truth. Dillon cares only about his younger brother and his career. He’s on the brink of superstardom if he can just decide on the next right script. But for that, he needs a script reader he can trust.

In a strange twist of fate…

Lane Channing is Dillon’s last chance. If Lane lasts the summer without becoming MacAvoy’s latest conquest, she’s guaranteed a job in entertainment. No problem, as long as she can ignore the heat that pulses through her every time Dillon is in the room. After all, love and commitment with a sweet, hometown girl would only ruin the Dillon MacAvoy brand.

My Review:

Dillon MacAvoy is the next big thing in Hollywood. He's been busy shooting film after film in order to make a name for himself in the movie industry, as well as being able to provide for himself and his brother Choo. Scripts are piling up and he has no one to read them on account of him having the need to sleep with every reader he gets.

Lane Channing arrives in LA, excited and eager to begin her new job which will pave her way into the industry. Lane's excitement quickly diminishes as she finds out that job went to someone else. She ends up homeless, broke, and super embarrassed after a run in with an uptight and rude actor.

Fortunately, a great new job drops into Lane's lap. Dillon's script reader.
The last thing Dillon wants is the pure and sweet looking girl from Kansas being dangled in front of him.
Despite Dillon's bad-mannered behavior toward Lane and her being career focused, she can't help getting flushed everytime she thinks about her gorgeous actor of a boss. She's only human!

I was thoroughly surprised by how Dillon was written. I thought I was going to hate him for most of the book, but his true colors showed rather quickly. It was so obvious how kind and good-hearted he was, even though he put up an opposite front. He knew what he had to do and who he had to be in order to make a name for himself in the business. When it mattered the most, he stood up for what he believed in and he fought when the people surrounding him said no. His adoration for his gay brother Choo was another amazing factor. While their parents treated Choo with absolutely no respect and were truly inhumane in their actions and words, Dillon stood up for his brother and supported him through and through.

Lane was in fact a sweet and innocent girl, but she had what it took to live, let alone work in LA. She quickly adjusted to the situations she was put in and I admired her dedication and drive. I understood her apprehension toward Dillon, but I wanted her to have a little more faith and confidence in herself.
While living in LA, she managed to stay grounded and not give in to wild ways of the city.

I thought the ending of the novel was romantic, but I was left wanting a little more from the parents of Dillon and Choo. Although I was barely able to stomach their parts already included in the novel, I think there could've been a tad more insight or perhaps an interaction between the guys and the parents. The reason Choo and Dillon are in LA is mainly because of their parents. Dillon's purpose in life is caused by the way his parents acted toward his brother.
Maybe what I really wanted was for Choo to say "f**k you mom and dad!"

The next book in the series is Broken Glamour which is all about Amanda (Lane's friend) and Ryan (Dillon's co-star). Their introduction in HG sort of gave way to their upcoming story. After reading the sneak peek included in HG, I'm looking forward to reading about those two.
