This is the story about a girl who lived, died, and met a guy… in that order.
Is it possible to find true love and happiness, while condemned to purgatory until the end of days?
Olivia Brennan wasn’t eager to find out. Working for a division of Purgatory and Associates, her job consisted of one headache after another, caused by the impatient souls waiting to move onto eternal paradise. After a hard day at work, she was most content to stay home, watching reruns or reading a book. Aside from a few friends occasionally forcing socialization, her afterlife was nothing special.
That all changed the moment Drake walked into her life. He was handsome, charming, and had a sadness behind his eyes she could relate to. It seemed that Fate had finally brought her a kindred spirit…
But could Olivia move past her own dark regrets of the life she left behind or would falling for him demand the ultimate sacrifice—herself?
Six words to describe Prayer for the Dead:
Trust- Olivia isn’t quick to trust. She fights hard to keep her guard up, but can’t fight the chemistry with Drake. He wants to earn that trust, but isn’t sure if he’s truly worthy of it. At times, he sabotages himself, causing Olivia to retract.
Guilt- Both Olivia and Drake live with an enormous amount of regret about situations that were beyond their control. The core of each character is defined by it. Every poor decision they each make is a direct result of this self-condemnation.
Depression- The blame Olivia places squarely on her own shoulders causes her to withdraw from life around her. She prefers seclusion, but isn’t completely aware of her own self-destructive behavior.
Friendship- One of the few constants in Olivia’s life is the friendship she shares with Devon. They are very protective of one another. Above all else, she fears losing this very important connection in her life.
Heartbreak- Each character suffers a tremendous amount of it, some more silently than others.Death- It’s the central core element that all the characters have in common. Each character handles their passing and subsequent afterlife, in different ways. Some view it as a bonus opportunity, while others view it as a punishment. Those that struggle, have to come terms with it in their own way and time.
