The first day of college gives every girl a chance to reinvent herself.
I go and screw mine up by meeting the most gorgeous guy I've seen in five years while talking to my cat.
But Andrew Crowner is far from judgmental. By the end of our interaction, he has me smitten by his easy manner and kind smile. And from the way his eyes linger on me before he leaves, I start to think that maybe I’ve caught his attention, too.
Lean, tattooed, and sexy as sin, Spencer is exactly the type I need to avoid. I would have no trouble with that... were it not for his swift and inexplicable interest in me.
Suddenly, I go from a girl with next-to-no experience with boys to one caught in the crosshairs of two completely different men.
Andrew's interest is wholesome and sweet. Spencer's is edgy and raw. My choice should be easy. But there are always complications, and sometimes, matters of the heart take the least expected turns.
"Memories of my teens flash through my mind: My grandmother chastising me for wanting to go to the eighth grade dance with a boy. The mantra drilled into me at the all-girls boarding school I attended the last four years that sex is bad. The way my whole life has been structured to teach me the dangers of pre-marital sex."
19 year old, Paige is starting off her freshman year at college. On move in day, she first meets Andrew Crowner (who catches her chatting with her cat, Pickles). Andrew is smart and kind, clearly the obvious choice for Paige. I liked him.. But then we're introduced to Spencer Ashford (who is in the middle of sexing her roommate). I'm a sucker for the bad boy, and that's what Spencer is. Or so he seems. Little by little, we get to see Spencer revealing that he may not be the cocky, man whore he comes off as. Paige brings out a different side of him and even her roommate Katy is confident that Paige can succeed in taming Spencer.
"That line reveals it to me. Now, I understand. I understand what drives him. I understand that the arranged words are so perfect that they might have been lifted from the depths of his soul.
He is not just singing. He is giving us a glimpse of his heart.
The distinction is almost imperceptible. Few will now his performance for what it really is. Few will sense the richer, more subtle layer hidden underneath the words.
The people around me will not know. It is through no fault of theirs. It does not mean they are immune to Spencer's spell. All it means is that the song is not for them.
It's for me."
Paige is attracted to both men and both of them want her. Oh, if only we could all have this dilemma!
A problem arises for Andrew and Paige. Something that keeps them from seeing where their relationship can go. Meanwhile, Spencer continues to chase after Paige, and she can't help being drawn in. She has a much stronger attraction to Spencer. Their chemistry is undeniable.
Paige has been brought up to think sex is bad. She's afraid of being intimate. She doesn't necessarily want to remain celibate until marriage, just not sleep around with random guys. She needed someone who excited and challenged her. Not someone who was predictable and boring. Spencer awoke the vixen within her. Each time he flirted and touched her, she stirred a little more.
For me, it was clear from the very beginning who I wanted for Paige. I became Team Spencer right away, without any doubts.
I built up a theory about halfway through concerning the connection between Andrew and Spencer. I was RIGHT! Scarlett threw in some twists and they were great!
I sensed something was up with Katy, Paige's roommate, from the start and that intrigued me. There were so many different theories floating in my head when it came to her. I love when a book makes me think!
Something that I really loved about this book was the connection that I felt with every character. Usually in books there's one, maybe two main characters that the story focuses on. In the case of Never Let Go I felt like everyone had their own part in the story. Katy, Spencer and Andrew's voices came through beautifully and I could see more books developing based on these strong characters. It was done well, and wasn't complicated and messy.
The ending isn't necessarily cliffhanger material, but it does leave you wanting more from these characters. They're so likable that you want to continue reading about them.
I enjoyed this story so much, and I look forward to reading book 2!
